Although corporate social responsibility (CSR) has gained considerable importance in the literature, most studies focus on the institutional and organizational levels of analysis. Contrary to this trend, the present study analyzes the influence of CSR on employee attitudes. Employees are one important element for the implementation of CSR practices. This dissertation intends to contribute for a conceptual and methodological refinement in the study of the corporate social responsibility (CSR) concept, as well as for a deeper understanding on how the perception employees hold of their company’s social performance influences their job attitudes, namely job satisfaction and organizational commitment. Com o presente estudo investigou-se a relação entre a responsabilidade social percebida e a satisfação no trabalho. Examinou-se ainda se a imagem organizacional desempenharia um papel mediador nesta relação. inquiriram-se 301 colaboradores relativamente ao envolvimento corporativo em três dimensões de responsabilidade social (económica/colaboradores e comunidade/ambiente, a imagem da organização e a satisfação no trabalho. Os resultados mostram que a percepção do envolvimento da organização em cada uma das dimensões de responsabilidade social se encontra positivamente associada à satisfação no trabalho. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to address the social meaning of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and improve understanding of this concept. Design/methodology/approach – A free association task was completed by a sample of 275 individuals, mostly employees from different industries, who were given “socially responsible corporation” as the stimulus. Findings – The results elicit three distinct views of a socially responsible corporation. Some individuals consider a socially responsible corporation to be one that undertakes its business operations in an efficient and ethical manner.
