Real-time collision detection in dynamic scenarios is a hard task if the algorithms used are based on conventional techniques of computer vision, since these are computationally complex and, consequently, time-consuming. On the other hand, bio-inspired visual sensors are suitable candidates for mobile robot navigation in unknown environments, due to their computational simplicity. The Lobula Giant Movement Detector (LGMD) neuron, located in the locust optic lobe, responds selectively to approaching objects. This neuron has been used to develop bio-inspired neural networks for collision avoidance. We report Monte Carlo simulations of phase behavior of colloidal suspensions with near-critical binary solvents using effective pair potentials from experiments. At off-critical solvent composition, the calculated phase diagram agrees well with measurements of the experimental system, indicating that many-body effects are limited. Close to the critical composition, however, agreement between experiment and simulation becomes poorer, signaling the increased importance of many-body effects. Both at and off the critical solvent concentration, the colloidal phase diagram is qualitatively similar to those of molecular systems and obeys the principle of corresponding states with one striking difference: it occurs in a narrow temperature interval of <1C below the solvent phase separation temperature.

Given a reference extruder with a certain geometry and operating point, the aim of scale-up is to define the geometry and operating conditions of a target extruder (generally of significantly different size) in order to subject the material being processed to the same flow and heat transfer conditions, thus yielding products with the same characteristics. Since existing scale-up rules are crude, as they usually consider a single performance measure and produce unsatisfactory results, this work approaches scale-up as a multi-criteria optimization problem, where the aim is to define the geometry/operating conditions of the target extruder that minimize the differences between the values of various performance criteria for the reference and target extruders.
