In order to provide a more extensive investigation of what this issue tells us about the Constitution in American life, the Center for Policy Studies has invited three members of our faculty for a panel discussion, based on their varied experience as a death penalty litigator, constitutional lawyer, and ethicist, and to respond to a series of questions from a student panel.
FCH/CIP4 homology-Bin-Amphiphysin-Rvs (F-BAR) domain proteins are a subfamily of the Bin-Amphiphysin-Rvs (BAR) superfamily of proteins. They contain unique domains that bind and reshape the phospholipid bilayers of endosomal compartments during endocytosis. Using a functional assay for cell survival, we identified an F-BAR protein, FCH/CIP4 homology and double Src homology 3 domains 2 (FCHSD2), that confers drug resistance. Stable expression of shRNA against FCHSD2 in multiple cell types showed that loss of FCHSD2 sensitized cells to apoptosis by doxorubicin. Silencing of FCHSD2 also enhanced the ability of fibroblasts to grow colonies in culture. Mass spectrometry analysis of FCHSD2 protein complexes identified multiple interacting proteins that are involved in adhesion and endosome trafficking. We identified and confirmed a novel int...
Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a demyelinating disease of the central nervous system resulting from a viral infection. JC virus (John Cunningham) is known to cause the demyelinating lesions in the white matter, but how oligodendrocyte death is really initiated during disease course is still under question. Besides the demyelination pathology, inflammation can be detected in the brain parenchyma of PML-patients. Though it is not established how the immune response including both activation of CD8+ cytotoxic T-lymphocytes and granzyme B release is involved in the pathogenesis. Therefore histochemical and immunohistochemical experiments were performed in order to get a better insight. The results of the investigations showed that the immune response is playing a minor role in PML and that hence induction of oligodendr...
Like death, the defining human reality underlying our relationships and views of life's meaning, the experiences and activities of undertakers, remains an uncommon subject for psychological research. Existential anxiety roots a society-wide denial of the fundamental nature of death. which necessitates the development of institutions to take responsibility for the dying and dead. As the image and service of the stigmatised funeral industry improves, society's experience of death should become more meaningful. The overview of the research into these topics noted the need for further studies. Within a holistic, ecosystemic epistemology, this study adopted a qualitative approach and case study method, which provided descriptions of the ecology, contexts, and relationships characteristic .of the undertaker's vocation by focussing ...
Management of second- and third-trimester fetal death in the presence of placenta previa is a dilemma for obstetricians. We herein describe a case of fetal death occurring at 23 weeks' gestation in the presence of placenta previa. Three weeks of expectant management failed to reduce uteroplacental blood perfusion evaluated with pulsatility index of the uterine artery. Labor was then induced with gemeprost vaginal pessary following overnight laminaria pretreatment. Vaginal delivery was achieved with total blood loss of 1900 ml. Homologous blood transfusion was obviated owing to autologous blood that had been stored during the waiting period.
A study was carried out in Glasgow of the cause of death in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
Purpose: This paper aims to assess whether disability occurrence is related more strongly to proximity to death than to age. Method: Self reported disability and vital status were available from six annual waves and a subsequent 12-year mortality follow-up of the Dutch GLOBE longitudinal study. Logit and Poisson regression methods were used to study associations of disability occurrence with age and with proximity to death. Results: For disability in activities of daily living (ADL), regression models with proximity to death had better goodness of fit than models with age. With approaching death, the odds for ADL disability prevalence and incidence rates increased 20.0% and 18.9% per year, whereas severity increased 4.1% per year. For the ages younger than 60, 60-69 and older than 70 years, the odds for ADL disability prevalence incre...

Overlaying was a common nineteenth century explanation of sudden infant death while bedsharing. This thesis shows that in many cases the term overlaying was a misnomer, and instead it identifies infant overlaying death as a socio-structural historical event that can best be understood within a sociological and social constructionist framework. It expands on the work of Giddens, Elias and Archer to develop a theoretical perspective that incorporates ideas about structuration, sequestration, figuration and reflexivity. It also deploys concepts such as motherhood, infancy, infant care, the family and intimacy to explore and analyse its research materials and develops two further explanatory concepts; reflexive motherhood and the sequestration of infancy. The thesis uses ideas around discourse as socio-structural conditions of action in or...
