This paper analyzes the effects of macro-economic conditions throughout life on the individual mortality rate. We estimate flexible duration models where the individual?s mortality rate depends on current conditions, conditions earlier in life (notably during childhood), calendar time, age, individual characteristics, including individual socio-economic indicators, and interaction terms. We use individual data records from Dutch registers of birth, marriage, and death certificates, covering an observation window of unprecedented size (1812-1999). These are merged with historical data on macro-economic and health indicators. The results indicate a strong effect of macro-economic conditions during childhood on mortality at all ages. Those who are born in bad times on average have a high mortality rate throughout life, in particular durin...

In this paper, generalized nonlinear models are proposed in order to incorporate the following considerations
in modeling an epidemic disease outbreak statistically. (1) The dependence of the data is handled
with a nonhomogeneous death or a nonhomogeneous birth process. (2) The first stage of the outbreak
is described with an epidemic susceptibles-infectives-removed (SIR) model. Soon the control measures
taken will dominate the process. These measures are in addition to the natural epidemic removal process.
The prevalence is related to the censored infection times in such a way that the distribution function
and thus the survival function satisfy approximately the first equation of the SIR model. This leads in a
natural way to the Burr family of distributions. (3) The nonhomogeneous birth process handles the fact
that in practice, with...

The purpose of this note is to point out that Karlin and McGregor's integral representation for the transition probabilities of a birth-death process on a semi-infinite lattice with an absorbing bottom state remains valid if one allows the possibility of absorption into the bottom state from any other state. Conditions for uniqueness of the minimal transition function are also given.

Cryonic suspension is a relatively new technology that offers those who can afford it the chance to be ‘frozen’ for future revival when they reach the ends of their lives. This paper will examine the ethical status of this technology and whether its use can be justified.
Among the arguments against using this technology are: it is ‘against nature’, and would change the very concept of death; no friends or family of the ‘freezee’ will be left alive when he is revived; the considerable expense involved for the freezee and the future society that will revive him; the environmental cost of maintaining suspension; those who wish to use cryonics might not live life to the full because they would economize in order to afford suspension; and cryonics could lead to premature euthanasia in order to maximize chances of success. Furthermore, scie...
Perinatal mortality rate is an important mark to evaluate women and perinatal health
care. It is of utmost importance to know causes and the evolution of its two components aiming to improve health care in different fields – sanitary conditions, diagnosis and treatment of infectious disease, immunisations, diagnosing and caring for medical diseases induced by pregnancy or directly related to it, providing skilled birth attendance, preventing birth asphyxia, preventing preterm birth complications and
infections. In high-income countries the epidemiology varies mainly with social and
economic conditions; in low-income countries, paired with poverty, undernutrition, superstition, lack of medical care, deficient basic sanitary conditions are also found.
Also, in rich countries, responsible for 1% of deaths, data are published and
improveme...
